Following in his father Liam's footsteps, Micheál Neeson is to play Michael Collins in The Rising, the new Irish film about the events of 1916.
Directed by Kevin McCann, The Rising stars Colin Morgan (Merlin, The Fall) as 1916 mastermind Seán Mac Diarmada, with David O'Hara (Braveheart) playing Dublin Brigade Commandant General James Connolly.
The plan is for the film to go into production in the autumn in time for a global 2016 release.
The script has been co-written by McCann and Colin Broderick.
The film marks Micheál Neeson's first major role.
Neil Jordan's 1996 film Michael Collins gave Neeson Sr one of his most iconic roles as the revolutionary leader and statesman.
